Johnson Medtech provides high performance and reliable motion subsystems for needle insertion and retraction in automated medication delivery. The types of dosing include single dose in high precision, single injection with the full cartridge and continuous micro dosing. Our custom engineered solutions are optimized for low power consumption necessary in battery powered devices, in both portable and miniature configurations. Custom subsystems integrated into the medication delivery device are engineered to meet the different viscosity, volume, speed, acceleration and accuracy requirements for delivering specific drugs to each patient.

Needle movement is the link between medication delivery devices and a patient. Controlled actuation and speed of needle insertion and retraction is critical to managing the patient's pain during frequent drug delivery.

Johnson Medtech custom engineers highly accurate needle movement systems through integrated design and system performance optimization. Johnson Medtech has designed two subsystems for efficient, extended battery life, low weight and low noise. The two subsystems are the Rack and Pinion System and the 4-Bar system. The Rack and Pinion subsystem operates at speeds of 0.5 msec and offers position detection via an integrated optical encoder. It is the smaller of the 2 subsystems and includes a flexible cable or connector for compact packaging. The 4-bar subsystem operates at speeds of 75 rpm and provides a custom needle actuation profile with controlled speed at various positions. The 4-Bar subsystem also incorporates position sensing. Both systems are rated at 3.3V.
